Keeping a Reading Journal

A reading journal is a record of your thoughts and feelings as you read a novel, a short story or a poem. Try using some of the following processes in keeping your journal:

Questions - ask yourself about events and characters as you read

Memories - write down memories from your own experience that appear to you

as you read

Prediction - predict what is going to happen next

Reflection - reflect on striking moments and ideas in the book

Comparison - compare how you behave and how characters in the text

are behaving

Thoughts - express your thoughts and feelings about characters and events

Comments - comment on how the story is being told

Regular writing will generate thoughts and give rise to unexpected insights!
