Canada Research Project

GOALS:

We will use the Big 6 Process of Information Problem Solving to learn about the provinces and territories of Canada. During our research, we will work in cooperative groups and focus on the following themes:

CRITERIA:

In our cooperative groups, we will make an informational booklet that could be used as a reference guide to our province/territory. The booklet will include the following:

  • A unique cover page that includes the title, date and names of all group members.

  • A table of contents identifying topic, author and page number.

  • A list of each member's contributions to the project.

  • A reflection question (generated by the group) for each of the following themes:
Geography, Civics, History, and Economics. Each member is responsible for writing at least one response to a reflection question, but all members must be able to answer each reflection question on their own.

  • Choose 6 of the 12 aspects of culture and write a paragraph for each aspect describing how it is represented by the people of the province/territory.

  • A political map of the province/territory. Use colored pencils, block letting and label all major cities. Do quality work.

  • A bibliography of all sources used for research, included as the last page of the booklet. The group must use at least three different types of sources for their research (i.e. book, electronic resource, magazine, newspaper).

  • Cooperative groups will also create a visual display that will be presented to the class and will contain the reflection questions chosen by the group for each of the following themes:
    Geography, Civics, History, and Economics.

  • Presentations will be at least 10 minutes but not more than 15 minutes in length. Each group may chose a spokesperson to present the display, but all group members must be prepared to answer questions.

PROCEDURES:

  1. Use the Big 6 research model to conduct resarch for project.
  2. Determine each member's responsibilities.
  3. Work together to reach the group's goal.
  4. Check to see that all criteria is met.

REFLECTION:

All group members will be able to explain the reflection questions chosen by the group for each of the themes of Geography, Civics, History, and Economics.
