Classroom Standards & Policies

Dear Parents & Students:

Welcome to the 2006 - 2007 school year. I am very excited about the prospect of working with you and your child. My goal this year is to provide the highest quality educational experience for each individual learner in our classroom. In striving to reach that goal, I believe the following components are essential in creating the necessary safe learning environment that fosters and serves our educational needs:

  • Peers and teachers should treat students with dignity and respect
  • Students should demonstrate self-responsibility with their academics, citizenship, and communication with parents, teachers, and peers
  • The teacher should provide instruction within a relevant and meaningful context
  • The teacher should provide a well planned, academically challenging learning environment that addresses individual student needs
  • The teacher should be an active participant in the learning process, working in partnership with students to achieve predetermined goals and outcomes

With regard to curriculum, our goal as teachers is to provide meaningful activities and projects that challenge students to read, write, think, and speak articulately and effectively. Throughout the year students will be given a variety of opportunities and options to demonstrate their knowledge, growth, and learning.

If you have any questions regarding assignments, or your student's progress, please feel free to contact me via e-mail: Mrs. Popravak(hpoprava@egreen.wednet.edu)
or check my web page (http://www.hmpathome.com/ps2006_2007index.html)

We are looking forward to working with you and your child this year to create a successful learning experience.

Homework Policy

Homework is a tool in the teaching and learning process when it has purpose and meaning as an extension of the learning in the classroom. Studying at home enhances student achievement, helping to develop self-discipline and good work/study habits. Students in our classroom should expect an average of 15-30 minutes of homework each night, which frequently consists of Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) in a book, novel, or magazine of the student's choice.

In addition to standing assignments already mentioned, homework in our classroom may be assigned to be completed outside of the normal school day for a number of reasons:

  1. Absence: to make up work missed during an excused absence
  2. Completion: to finish work not completed at school for which time has been given to do so in class
  3. Extension: to provide students with opportunities to transfer specific skills or concepts to new situations
  4. Practice: to help students master specific skills which have been presented in class
  5. Preparation: to help students prepare for the next step in a unit or study for a quiz or test

Late Work Policy

Unexcused late work is not acceptable. Students will be given one non-transferable late work pass at the beginning of each six week grading period to be used or not at their discretion during that time frame.  This pass may not be used for class projects.

While we encourage and expect every student to complete each assignment and project to the best of their ability, partial credit will be awarded, at our discretion, for incomplete work submitted on time, but not for work turned in late without a pass. Please note that for each day of excused absence one day is given to complete or make up work.

Parental Involvement

We encourage parents and guardians to play an active role in their child’s education. The following is a list of suggestions for doing so:

  • Help students set aside time and a quiet place at home to study and do homework.
  • Help students set goals and deadlines for work to be completed
  • Help students build a daily habit of reading, writing, and completing homework
  • Help students take small steps on large projects
  • Contact the teacher via phone or e-mail for clarification of assignments, projects, or progress

With your cooperation and support, we are that much closer as a team to providing our students with the best possible chance for success!

Grading

Letter grades are one way for parents, students, and teachers to measure academic growth and progress.  Students will receive one grade for Language Arts and one for Social Studies   Semester grades are a refection of student work over the entire 18 week grading period.   Progress reports are mailed home by the school at the end of each six week grading period.   I do provide progress reports at approximately half-way through each six week grading period.  If you'd like more frequent reports, please contact me, via e-mail, Mrs. Popravak, to make individual arrangements.

Grading is as follows:

90 - 100% = A 70 - 79.5 = C
80 - 89.5 = B 69.5 AND BELOW = F

Please sign and return this attached form to your student's classroom.
