  CONTENT:
  LessonPlanSearch.com is a database of links to over two thousand lesson plans for a variety of subject areas.
  AESTHETICS:
  The page is formatted in a table that is separated by color and a few graphics. Advertisements are present.
  ORGANIZATION:
  The lessons are organized into sixteen subject categories that are indexed on the main page. The database can be searched by either following the directory of links or by keyword.
  REVIEW:
  Busy teachers will appreciate this large database of ready to use lesson plans. There are sixteen subject areas available with grade level subcategories in each. In addition to the major subject areas, other areas such as rubrics, seasonal activities, technology and media, and cooking are included. A search will yield a list of matching results that are annotated and include the date that the lesson was added. Additionally it shows the number of times the plan has been accessed from the database and a rating by users. In the left side menu, users will find links to the latest additions as well as educational news, current thematic unit and the teacher forum.

  AESTHETICS:
  Colorful and kid-friendly, this site is quite appealing. Graphics are related to the literature reviewed and will appeal to anyone with an enjoyment of children's books.

  ORGANIZATION:
  Each page of the site offers a header with links to the six main areas ­ Features, Series, Authors, Reviews, Games, and Trivia. A sidebar on the left of each page offers additional links and more information.

  REVIEW:
  The KidsReads site is part of The Book Report Network, founded in 1996. This group of sites offers book reviews, excerpts, author interviews, and other literature related information to readers each week. KidsReads focuses on literature appropriate for early and middle elementary students. The site includes reviews of current children's books, along with excerpts and author interviews. Each week, the site offers students an opportunity to answer a "Question of the Week" and vote in various book and reading related polls. Visitors can check on readers' responses to previous questions and polls. Students and teachers can sign up for the weekly newsletter sent by email. The site also offers The Bookworm Mailbag where readers can share opinions and information on favorite or new book selections. The Games section offers word scrambles and trivia quizzes about an abundance of selections. This site is an excellent resource and stimulus for readers in the elementary grades - offering lots of exciting information about authors and covers books from the classic to brand-new titles.

Tell your students that Baum's goal was to write an entertaining American fairy tale because he felt many traditional tales were tooo firghtening. challenge students to find seveeral fairy tales with violent scenes or scary characters and rewrite them to eliminnate the scary parts.

• Butterflies and moths are sometimes hard to tell apart. Generally, butterflies have slim, hairless bodies, are brightly colored, fly in the daytime and have slim antennae with knobs on the ends. Moths usually have think, haairy bodies, are dully colored, fly when it's dark, and have either slim or feathery antennae without knobs.
  Choose one butterfly or moth to investigate. Explain the ternm symmetrical and tell your students that butterflies and moths are bilaterally symmetrical--that is, their left and right halves are mirror images. Have them draw the left or right half of their insect on grapph paper, then list interesting facts about the insect around the edges of the paper. finally have students exchange papers, read the facts and complete the pictures symmetrically.

• Tornadoes are most likely to striek between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. Explain to your students that by late afternoon the sun has heated the earth sufficiently to cause warm, humid air to rise. If other weather conditions are right, this air can serve as fuel for a tornado. Most tornaodes las than 15 minutes.

  Secrets of an Ancient World

  CONTENT: This interactive site from the National Geographic Society features an exploration of the pyramids, lesson plans, and student activities.
  REVIEW: Egypt: Secrets of an Ancient World will appeal to both students and teachers. The interactive adventure, Explore the Pyramids focuses on who built them, how old they are, and what's inside. The pyramid index allows the user to roll the mouse over the different pyramids to see the name and location on the map. Clicking on a pyramid reveals a diagram of the interior, facts about the construction and photos. Egyptian dynasties are shown on a timeline with brief information about each. Lesson plans are available for grades K-12 that include objectives and correlations to geography standards as well as suggestions for assessment and lesson extensions. Additionally, an online journal documents an excursion through the pyramids by a National Geographic reporter.
